Eczema Information for Parents
What is Eczema?
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a very common skin condition. Eczema often affects infants and children. Eczema usually starts as dry, itchy skin that becomes red and inflamed. Eczema can occur anywhere on the body but is most common on the face, arms, and legs. Although eczema cannot be cured, it can be controlled.
Eczema in Children
In infants and young children, eczema may first appear as a patchy facial rash around the cheeks and chin, which can progress to red, scaling, oozing skin. As the child grows older, the rash may spread to the knees and elbows. Older children and adults are more likely to have eczema behind the knees and inside the elbows, on the wrists, ankles, and hands, and on the sides of the neck.
